Wow - what a fine new chapter! I loved this story of Tarlanc and the Easterlings laughing at each other. So Tarlanc has been declared mad? - that explains a lot. And another cliffhanger! It seems like they will be finally caught this time. I guess the riders have dogs with them that ole Huan has sniffed out?

Wow - what a fine new chapter! Thank you, Agan. At first, I wasn't sure how the character of Tarlanc would develop, but by the end of this tale, he had met all of my expectations. Yes, old Tarlanc the miller, ancient of age and not quite so wise as we would hope men of his vintage to be, is - to put it kindly - an eccentric. While the Easterling commander's subaltern wanted to kill old Tarlanc, the general took mercy on him and declared him mad. (Probably feeling that it was some sort of dubious "blessing" of fate.) Haun had been restless for part of the evening, and he surely has sniffed out something, but what?

Hmmm...so Tarlanc is friendly with the Southrons? That explains why his mill is still intact.

Nice new chapter. Strange that the slavers don't like dogs - don't they have hounds for hunting escaped slaves? Or do they use orcs instead?

Khazar,
Yes, Tarlanc is friendly with the Southrons. That is why his mill is still intact and why his head remains upon his shoulders. Before the enemy soldiers arrived in Ivrenlaer, the old man had talked a brave battle but when push came to shove, he lost his courage.
Agan,
Dislike of dogs is a personal quirk of Captain Ubri, not of Southrons as a whole. Ubri is especially nervous when the dog wants to tear him limb from limb. He cannot even see the dog which is barking at him on the other side of the door, so he does not know how big or ferocious it is. That is a chance he does not want to take.
On this slave search, the orcs fulfill the role of dogs. They are more expendable than trained hunting dogs, which require a man who is master of hounds to handle them. Brutish, slow-witted orcs are cheaper to hire than a professional huntsman.
As the plot unfolds, Esarhaddon might wish that he had gone to the expense of employing a master of hounds. MAJOR HINT. ;D
