For country girls they're not doing a very good job of figuring things out, are they? Or are they just waiting for tall, dark & handsome to rescue them?

In this modern age of TV and internet, I know teenage girls who don't even know the location of prominent landmarks (such as rivers) which are only a few miles away. So, using this logic, I think that the sisters, who do not know how to read or write and never went more than five miles from their village, would have some directional problems in a foreign country far from home.
The whole escape attempt was stupid. Elffled realizes that. So does Elfhild, in the back of her mind, but she doesn't want to admit it.

It's not that the attempt was stupid. It's that they seem to be unable to process their surroundings.
They haven't thought of fish, for instance.
And even illiterate peasants can find directions using the sun.

They're not lost. They just keep getting detoured because of enemies. At last, they were able to head west, like they wanted to do two days before. However, they are forced to make yet another detour, this time to get water... Elfhild had hoped to find something edible which had been left behind in the village, but she had no luck. They still have a bit of food, however. As for fish? Perhaps. The water level is still awfully low, though... Stay tuned. (EDIT: In a previous version of this post, I had said that the sisters' food suply got destroyed in the river. That was a slip on my part... There have been so many versions of this section of the story, it would put HOME to shame... )

Great new chapter - I liked this hallucination. Some experiences are not easily forgotten, are they?

Agan, glad you liked the chapter, and, no, some experiences are not easily forgotten. Elfhild was a victim of heat exhaustion brought about by the extreme temperature of the day and the fact she had not drunk any water for a number of hours. She was already stressed and exhausted by her previous experiences, and she had been running in the hot sun. Under the circumstances, her sister did the only thing she could do for her, ie, pull her into the water and let her cool off that way.
Her hallucinations were certainly bizarre, but no more bizarre than many others I have been told about by people who experienced them for one reason or another (illness, overdose on drugs, etc).
Many years ago, one of my grandfathers suffered a severe heat stroke which left him almost deaf. He survived that, though, and lived to be 93, and always had exceptionally good health up to a few days before he died. Fortunately for Elfhild, her heat exhaustion was not this severe.

When a girl is almost seduced by a mysterious stranger who drinks her blood, it tends to leave an impression on her..... ;D

I didn't think he actually drank her blood, that all of that was part of her fantasy. I never think of them as vampires!

The Nazgul of the Circles are not really vampires, in that they don't need to drink blood to survive. However, they are sorcerers and use blood for their spells. They also like to drink blood from time to time, either for magical purposes, ie binding spells; to glory over an enemy; because they are in a bloodlust rage and their "evil" natures have overpowered their humanity; because it is a ritual in their native culture; or purely for pleasure. (Some are rather kinky... ;D ) Not all of the Nine are the same, however, and while some would drink a chalice of their enemy's blood before or after a battle for good luck and more power, others would think that practice was disgusting and barbaric.

What's a little blood drinking other than a usually harmless quirk? ;D I don't expect that anyone will be turned into anything, and I don't invision any phantasmagoric bats flying about that can go through concrete objects at will. Besides - how do we know if she saw a Nazgul or not, and if she did, which one was he? She maintained he tore her dress, but yet the next morning the garment was totally intact. Hmmm....
