In Chapter 12 of "Journey of Sorrow," there was a short piece near the end about how, far above the wretched captives, the Powers played in the heavens, absorbed in their own games just as the captives were absorbed in their own sufferings. This dated back to an earlier version of the chapter in which the camp had stricter security, and the messenger girls had to sneak around in order not to be spotted by the guards, as the moon was almost full and the night was bright. Two rewrites later, the piece no longer seemed to fit, so I saved it and made a drabble out of it.
