Dan started reading this book. He made a good point, one to seriously consider, I think.
Why wouldn't the messages be magicked in such a way as they could only be opened by the intended recipient? Certainly when dealing with Sauron you want his things to arrive inviolate. It's not like this is a phone bill or a grocery list. Why leave anything to chance?

A message could be enchanted so that only the intended recipient could read it, but Sauron could easily crack the spell, since he would be more powerful than the sender in this case. This scenario could work in the story, but we chose a different one. Whatever the case, Skri MUST be kept in the dark, so that he can get the letters mixed up. Sauron needs to receive the letter intended for Kalus, so that he can mess up the lives of the twins. They might not be Hurin and his family, but they still are fun to play with for a while. By allowing the twins to get sold into slavery, Sauron is punishing the Witch-king, as he feels that his servant has botched up the war.
